International jazz-tronica trio FM Experiment unveil their latest single, “Fly,” an intense and reflective new chapter from their forthcoming conceptual album Icarus. Blending live improvisation with immersive electronic textures, the track captures the group’s signature fusion of groove, experimentation, and narrative depth.
Formed at Berklee College of Music, FM Experiment brings together French drummer and producer Flo Mavridorakis, American Grammy-winning keyboardist Warren Pettey, and Italian guitarist Francesco Stacciolli. Known for seamlessly merging jazz improvisation with funk, hip-hop, afro-beat, and electronic music, the trio create a meticulously crafted sonic world that retains some spontaneity.
Following the release of their debut album ‘Shades’ and two fully improvised beat tapes, ‘Imperfections’ and ‘The Figueroa Beat Tape’, the band continues to push their creative boundaries with Icarus, a conceptual project exploring the duality of ambition. “Fly” serves as a pivotal moment within that narrative, revisiting the myth of Icarus with a crucial twist: what if he turned back before burning his wings?
“When you look up at the sky, you might think it’s a destination, what you’ve always worked for, your most burning desire,” the band reflects. “But what if the journey was actually what you craved, what fulfilled you? Wouldn’t that be liberating?”
That question forms the emotional core of “Fly.” Hypnotic rhythms pulse beneath layered synths and expressive guitar textures, while intricate drum patterns anchor the track in a driving, almost trance-like momentum. The result is both expansive and introspective, music that moves the body while inviting reflection.
To deepen the storytelling, the band collaborated with poet Valerie Hill, who wrote an original poem inspired by the album’s themes. Her recorded spoken-word passages were woven throughout the project, chopped and layered into the music to reinforce its conceptual arc. Additional production sessions followed to refine the sonic details and ensure alignment between the music and the narrative. Warren Pettey and Flo Mavridorakis later mixed and mastered the album together, maintaining full creative control over its immersive sound world.
The creation process mirrored the album’s themes of spontaneity and trust. Before production began, Flo developed the overarching narrative and drafted a series of sonic sketches. The trio then entered the studio and recorded the bulk of the album in just two days, building from those initial ideas through extended improvisation and arrangement sessions guided by the Icarus concept.
With “Fly,” FM Experiment presents a meditation on modern ambition, burnout, and the courage to redefine success. It’s a bold statement from a trio unafraid to blur genres, question myths, and let improvisation lead the way.
