Ally Bakst Confronts Desire and Darkness on New Alt-Pop Single ‘Pain & Pleasure’

NYC-born, LA-based singer, songwriter, and producer Ally Bakst unveils her latest single, “Pain & Pleasure,” a fierce and moody alt-pop electronic track that explores the intoxicating tension between emotional comfort and emotional chaos, marking the 3rd release from her upcoming mixtape due later this year. Driven by pulsing energy and layered sonic textures, the single continues to define Bakst’s growing reputation for immersive songwriting and atmospheric production.

Operating largely independently with a small circle of trusted collaborators, Ally has developed a distinct sonic identity rooted in alternative pop and electronic experimentation while still maintaining a strong mainstream pull. Her uniquely raspy and mysterious vocal tone, paired with expansive sound design and introspective lyricism, creates songs that feel cinematic, personal, and emotionally resonant.

With “Pain & Pleasure,” Bakst dives into the strange psychological territory where suffering begins to feel familiar, almost comforting. The track unfolds through a carefully sculpted soundscape of synths, guitars, and textural layers that feel intentionally off-balance, mirroring the emotional contradictions at the core of the song.

The result is a track that moves dynamically between tension and release. Strategic moments of silence give way to surging sonic bursts, allowing the music to physically embody the emotional push and pull described in the lyrics.

“There’s a strange comfort in suffering,” Bakst says. “We can become so attached to our own pain that it starts to feel like home, a place where you’re trapped between everything good feeling bad and everything bad feeling good. I wanted the song to feel that push and pull in real time, almost as if the music itself couldn’t decide whether it wanted to consume you or pull back.”

Drawing inspiration from a wide spectrum of artists, including Fleetwood Mac, MGMT, Imogen Heap, Radiohead, Crystal Castles, Billie Eilish, Lana Del Rey, Tame Impala, Lorde, The Marías, and Labrinth, Bakst channels a blend of alternative edge and pop accessibility that continues to evolve with each release.

Beyond music, Bakst is also a multidisciplinary fine artist, working across photography, painting, and creative direction. This visual sensibility shapes the immersive worlds surrounding her music, allowing her to build multidimensional experiences that connect sound, imagery, and emotion. Her music has to date drawn praise from Notion Magazine, EARMILK, and LOCK Magazine, among others, along with prominent Spotify editorial placements, resulting in a monthly listenership of well over 100,000 and close to 6 million streams to date.

With “Pain & Pleasure,” Ally Bakst pushes further into her signature space, where vulnerability meets power, beauty meets tension, and sound becomes a mirror for the complexities of the human psyche.
