Icelandic cellist and composer Eythor Arnalds unveils “Opening,” a deeply meditative new single taken from his forthcoming album Music for Walking, set for release on 29 May 2026 via Alda Music. Positioned as a quiet yet powerful threshold into the album’s immersive world, “Opening” invites listeners into a space where movement, sound, and consciousness converge.
Working at the intersection of neo-classical minimalism, cinematic ambient music, and contemporary composition, Arnalds continues to shape a body of work designed not simply to be heard, but to be experienced. Drawing comparisons to artists such as Max Richter, Ólafur Arnalds, Brian Eno, and Hildur Guðnadóttir, his music explores altered states of awareness through rhythm, repetition, and subtle emotional shifts.
“Opening” embodies this philosophy in its purest form. Beginning with delicate, deliberate notes on an aged piano, the piece gradually unfolds as warm, breath-like strings enter, creating a sense of expansion and quiet transformation. Rooted in cello-led minimalism and performed alongside members of the Reykjavík Symphony Orchestra, the composition reflects a physical and emotional journey inspired by Arnalds’ walks through Iceland’s striking landscapes.
“‘Opening’ is the third single from the upcoming album ‘Music for Walking’. The piece delivers a quiet threshold into a world where movement becomes meditation,” Arnalds explains. “It was written while walking a small mountain on Iceland’s south coast—moving from dense forest into an open clearing of moss and lava under the midnight sun. The music mirrors that transition: from enclosure to expanse, from thought to presence.”
Recorded at Reykjavík’s iconic Harpa Concert Hall and produced and mixed by Grammy-nominated engineer Bergur Þórisson, the track benefits from a rich yet restrained sonic palette. The recording is conducted by Viktor Orri Árnason, whose collaborations span artists such as Björk, Jóhann Jóhannsson, and Yo-Yo Ma, further grounding the project in Iceland’s globally respected contemporary classical scene.
Accompanying the single is a visually arresting film by filmmaker Karim Illya, placing Arnalds within Iceland’s elemental terrain, from volcanic craters to windswept coastlines and glacial formations. The result is a striking dialogue between sound and geology, reinforcing the album’s core idea: music as a companion to movement and environment.
Music for Walking follows Arnalds’ debut solo album The Busy Child (2025) and the live EP String Theory (2025), expanding his vision of music as an environmental and psychological experience. Structured around nine “Promenades” and one “Riposo,” the album is conceived as a soundtrack for walking, aligned with breath, pace, and the shifting textures of the world around us.
“In a land where time moves at different speeds, I wanted to create something that lives within that same sense of flow,” Arnalds reflects. “These pieces are not just compositions, they are spaces to inhabit, step by step.”
With “Opening,” Eythor Arnalds offers a gentle yet profound entry point into that space, an invitation to slow down, to listen deeply, and to rediscover the simple act of moving through the world with intention.
