Manchester-based singer-songwriter Sara Leanne has released her EP ‘Uprooted’, with powerful single ‘Song From Your Daughter’ as the lead track – a piano-led single that sits somewhere between blues, soul and timeless singer-songwriter territory: warm and jazz-tinged without settling into either genre outright.
Sara wrote the track to work through the loss of her father, channelling grief, helplessness, guilt and numbness into something she describes as a form of therapy. That honesty runs through every part of the song, from the unhurried piano to a vocal performance that carries real weight. Recording it wasn’t easy either – Sara struggled to get through early takes of the vocal, and it was only after stepping away and coming back that she sang it through in one pass, the take that made the final cut.
It’s a fitting way to introduce Sara’s world. She’s a pianist and internationally touring musician whose music draws on Bonnie Raitt, Carole King, Tedeschi Trucks Band and The Staves, blending rich vocal warmth with reflective songwriting. Away from her own material, she’s also known for performing the role of Christine McVie with Rumours of Fleetwood Mac, officially endorsed by Mick Fleetwood, and has played renowned venues across the world as a vocalist, pianist and musical director.
Manchester has been home for five years, and it’s the city where Sara became a full-time musician, building the relationships and collaborations that now shape her sound. That community is written into ‘Song From Your Daughter’: the track was produced by Andrew Jones (who also plays piano), recorded by Matt Butler — an engineer with credits including Paul McCartney, Pink Floyd and Johnny Cash — at Yellow Shark Studios in Cheltenham. The artwork is by Pete Edwards, Sara’s father, the very person the song is written for.
