BRYANT KEITH is not short of ways to describe what he does. He is an independent R&B artist, songwriter, producer and psychologist, and all of those roles feed into the music.
Born in Indianapolis and now based in Houston, KEITH has been developing what he calls “psychological R&B”, a style built around examining the emotional and psychological side of everyday experiences. His latest single, “IMPATIENT”, offers a clear example of that approach.
The track is centred on a relationship that has become difficult to navigate, but KEITH is interested in more than the romance itself. The lyrics touch on attachment, frustration, doubt and the choices people make when they are struggling to let go.
That interest in human behaviour is hardly surprising given KEITH’s background. He describes songwriting as a way to explore the human condition through existential, spiritual and emotional perspectives, giving his music a focus that extends beyond the usual relationship themes.
He also takes a hands-on approach to making the records. KEITH wrote and produced “IMPATIENT” in his home studio, using an AKAI MPK keyboard, drum chops and soul samples. The song came together in around 10 hours before going through several revisions.
Musically, KEITH draws on contemporary R&B while bringing in the influence of early-2000s R&B. The result gives his ideas a familiar musical setting, while the subject matter comes from his own perspective.
“IMPATIENT” is part of THE LOVE PACT, his forthcoming EP, and it arrives at an interesting point in KEITH’s development. Rather than simply presenting himself as another R&B singer with a collection of relationship songs, he has already given his work a clear concept and a reason for existing.
The next chapter will come with THE LOVE PACT, but KEITH has already established the central idea: take the things people feel, question why they behave the way they do, and turn that into R&B.
