Award-winning American pop singer-songwriter Matt Thompson returns with his electrifying new single “Echo”, an energetic, Y2K-charged pop anthem that blends glossy early-2000s nostalgia with raw emotional tension.
With more than 4 million streams on his debut album No Shame, Thompson has carved out a lane defined by big hooks, fearless vulnerability, and undeniable pop instincts. His sophomore album Accelerate delivered standout tracks including “Devil’s Dance”, “Accelerate” and “U Don’t Get 2”, helping earn multiple awards, a Top 5 U.S. radio hit, a feature in Billboard Magazine’s 2023 Grammy Contender edition, and a performance slot at SXSW 2024. His previous single “In the Dark” continued the momentum, hitting No. 1 on Amazon Pop Best-Sellers and reaching the Top 40 on U.S. Pop iTunes.
Now, Thompson leans fully into the drama with “Echo”. The track began simply, written solo at the piano before evolving in the studio with producer Ryan Binhammer.
“I wrote it by myself to piano and took it to my producer Ryan Binhammer and said, ‘I want to make it early 2000s leaning’”, Thompson explains. What followed is a sleek, high-energy pop record layered with shimmering synths, punchy percussion, and a chorus built for maximum emotional release.
At its core, “Echo” explores the lingering anxiety of loving someone whose past still feels present.
“‘Echo’ is about suspecting your current partner still has residual feelings for an ex that they’ve kept as an active friend”, Thompson shares. “And your partner having so much history with this person and it just lingers in your thoughts.”
That emotional undercurrent fuels the track’s urgency, turning quiet insecurity into a cinematic pop statement. It is nostalgic in sound but modern in subject, capturing the mental replay and second-guessing that can echo through a relationship.
Beyond music, Thompson’s creative drive extends into the luxury space. He is also the founder of Matt Thompson Fragrances, a premium fragrance line that reflects his commitment to bold identity and sensory storytelling. Just as his music captures mood and memory, his fragrances are designed to leave a lasting impression, reinforcing his brand as both artist and entrepreneur.
With “Echo”, Matt Thompson proves once again that he understands the art of impact, whether through sound or scent. As his momentum continues to build across streaming platforms, radio, and live stages nationwide, this latest release signals an artist fully in command of his era while confidently nodding to the one that shaped him.
