Veteran songwriter and guitarist Darryl Scotti returns with a striking reimagining of “State Of Mind,” the latest release from Darryl Scotti and Big Yard. Transforming the band’s 2024 original into a cinematic, a cappella-driven experience, “State Of Mind (Remix)” blends layered vocal harmonies, smooth jazz textures, and atmospheric Americana into a track that feels both intimate and expansive.
Best known as the founder of Big Yard and former guitarist for legendary pop-rock group Spiral Starecase, Scotti has spent decades crafting music rooted in storytelling, empathy, and emotional connection. Across his recent Poets & Heroes chapter, Scotti and his collaborators have explored themes of homelessness, mental health, fractured relationships, and social division through richly detailed songwriting and genre-blurring arrangements. With “State Of Mind (Remix),” the project takes another unexpected turn, stripping things back while simultaneously expanding the emotional depth of the original song.
Produced by longtime collaborator Larry Antonino and reimagined through an inventive arrangement by JB Craipeau, the remix moves away from traditional band instrumentation in favour of textured vocal layers and subtle rhythmic movement. The result is a smooth, late-night listening experience where jazz undercurrents and spacious harmonies create a dreamlike atmosphere that lingers long after the track ends.
That sense of reinvention has become central to Big Yard’s creative identity. Rather than chasing trends or algorithm-driven moments, Scotti continues to focus on music that invites reflection and connection. Across decades of songwriting, his work has consistently balanced poetic lyricism with warmth and humanity, earning comparisons to the narrative depth of Bruce Springsteen and the sophisticated musicality of Steely Dan.
On “State Of Mind (Remix),” those influences are filtered through an entirely different lens. The groove is restrained yet immersive, the mood lonesome but comforting, allowing the vocals themselves to become the emotional centrepiece. It is both experimental and accessible, carrying the spirit of classic Americana storytelling while embracing a more contemporary, minimalist approach to arrangement.
Backed by the collective chemistry of Big Yard, including key collaborators Larry Antonino and Joey Gutos, Scotti continues to prove that reinvention does not require abandoning substance. Instead, “State Of Mind (Remix)” demonstrates how a song can evolve into something entirely new while deepening the emotional core that made it resonate in the first place.
With its smooth a cappella textures, understated jazz influence, and reflective atmosphere, “State Of Mind (Remix)” offers another compelling chapter in Darryl Scotti and Big Yard’s ongoing exploration of music as connection, conversation, and healing.
