Melbourne-based songwriter Gary Hubber returns with “Running From The Light,” taken from his upcoming album “A Dangling Thread.” The track is a warm, rolling pop-rock single that leans into motion over resolution and curiosity over conclusion. Built on ringing guitars, steady momentum, and Hubber’s instinctively conversational lyricism, the single captures an artist more interested in the road beneath his feet than the destination ahead.
Known for writing songs “the long way round,” Hubber occupies a space where classic rock instincts meet modern reflection. His work values feeling over flash, allowing meaning to emerge gradually rather than declaring itself outright. That approach is central to “Running From The Light,” a song told from the perspective of someone who hears talk of final answers and politely keeps walking.
There’s humour in the defiance. The song nods at the idea of an endpoint, heaven, hell, certainty, closure, and then laces up its boots and moves on. With an upbeat, southern-tinged drive, “Running From The Light” celebrates stubborn hope, restless curiosity, and the belief that as long as there are still things to try, the story isn’t finished yet.
“They say there’s a light at the end of things… This song hears all that and nods politely. Then it tightens its laces,” Hubber explains. “It’s not trying to outrun death. It’s trying to stay in conversation with life for as long as possible.”
The single follows Hubber’s acclaimed 2025 album New Tricks, a record shaped by reflection, resilience, and quiet realisations that drew warm praise across Melbourne’s songwriting community. The album’s standout track “Rise, Shine, and Fly”, was voted Top Five Songs of the Year by the Real Songwriters of Melbourne, cementing Hubber’s reputation as a writer whose songs speak plainly and land honestly.
Like much of his work, “Running From The Light” favours suggestion over explanation. It leaves space for the listener’s own history to step in, guitars ringing, rhythms rolling forward, the journey unfolding at its own pace. It’s music for people who still believe a good song can shift the mood of a room, stir a memory, or quietly reframe the way the world looks on the walk home.
With “Running From The Light,” Gary Hubber doesn’t argue with fate. He simply keeps moving, one step, one breath, one mile at a time.
