Singer-songwriter Steve Stinson transforms heartbreak, uncertainty and years of life-changing experiences into his debut album ‘Cocoon’.
Spanning nine tracks and blending blues, folk and Americana with melodic warmth and rich storytelling, Cocoon is an album about what happens when life doesn’t unfold according to plan. Rather than resisting those moments, Stinson explores how disappointment, upheaval and uncertainty can become catalysts for something better, gradually reshaping who we are and where we’re headed.
That philosophy is rooted in a pivotal experience from Stinson’s own life. While progressing through a promising career outside of music, he made the decision to leave his job and follow a relationship to Europe. When the relationship ended before the move could happen, he returned to work shaken by an experience that would ultimately force him to reassess the direction of his life.
The album’s title track transforms Stinson’s heartbreak into a wider reflection on growth, recognising how experiences that feel devastating in the moment can ultimately become catalysts for positive change.
That idea carries across Cocoon. Previously released singles ‘Does Anyone Else’ captures the moment Stinson began questioning the pursuit of career progression at the expense of personal fulfilment, while ‘Evergreen’ turns towards the passion that remained constant throughout every change in his life: music.
“Everybody’s got to start somewhere,” Stinson says. “But ultimately, I think it really just starts with a change of perspective.”
‘Fly Away’ expands that search for purpose into Stinson’s life abroad, reflecting on his move from the United States to Australia and the years of travel that followed. “It’s about discovering that home isn’t always a place,” he explains. “Sometimes it’s the person you become along the way.”
Together with ‘Always On My Mind’, ‘Lost In The Tide’, ‘Make You Move’, ‘New Reality’ and ‘The Ledger’, the songs chart a life in motion, exploring how identity and purpose are gradually reshaped through change, setbacks and experience.
Born in Stillwater, Oklahoma, raised between the United States and Australia and now based in Papua New Guinea, Stinson has experienced that process of adaptation firsthand. Drawing inspiration from storytellers including Bob Dylan and Fleetwood Mac, alongside the piano-led emotional immediacy of The Fray and the atmospheric qualities of Coldplay, Stinson filters blues, folk and Americana through his own experiences. Country and blues heard through his father during childhood also sit somewhere within that musical foundation, giving his songwriting a sense of familiarity without obscuring his individual voice.
With Cocoon, those years of writing, travelling, working and questioning finally converge into Stinson’s first full-length statement. Appropriately, the process of releasing a debut album has itself become an extension of its central message: that meaningful change requires consistency, sacrifice and the willingness to begin.
“I hope that the record achieves what its theme is, that hard work and consistency pay off in the long run,” Stinson says. “Making music is fun, but it isn’t easy or cheap either. There’s some sacrifice that comes with it, and for me this is the first step.”
He continues: “I hope that listeners find a new sound that they like. Something new is always nice. But I also hope that it hits home somewhere for them in a way that aligns with the themes of the album.”
On Cocoon, Steve Stinson doesn’t present transformation as a clean journey from one version of yourself to another. Instead, his debut embraces the uncertainty in between, the heartbreaks, departures, questions and leaps of faith that slowly turn experience into growth.
