There are moments when the thing you’ve spent months building suddenly stops feeling like yours.
For Sahej, that moment became “Not Yet”.
The 19-year-old singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist had spent weeks, and eventually months, composing what was intended to become his third song. When he finally returned to the project after taking a week away with his family, something had changed. The song was technically complete. It was objectively good. It could probably have succeeded.
But Sahej hated it.
Rather than force the song into existence, he walked out of his room with his guitar. In the middle of that frustration, a new melody emerged. A guitar progression began to take shape, and with it came a phrase he could hear thousands of voices singing: “I’m not ready”.
That moment became “Not Yet”.
Built around a persistent acoustic-guitar arpeggio, delicate piano, sweeping strings, layered vocals, understated drums, synths, and atmospheric production, “Not Yet” inhabits the space between vulnerability and determination. Its subdued vocals and ethereal soundscape place Sahej alongside the emotional worlds of artists such as Joji, Keshi, Billie Eilish, and Bryant Barnes, while retaining a distinctly personal perspective.
At its core, “Not Yet” is about admitting fear without surrendering to it.
“It’s a testament to the fears I have accumulated throughout my life, and the fact that my purpose will not change no matter how afraid I am. It’s in essence a song about admitting to a moment of weakness, and that the job will still be done once that moment subsides.” – Sahej
For Sahej, music has always been connected to a larger purpose: to alleviate the suffering of others. His songwriting draws from haunting personal experiences while reaching toward something universal; the desire to be understood, to find meaning, and to become more than the fear holding you back.
Currently studying Neuroscience at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, Sahej is pursuing that purpose from two seemingly different worlds: science and music. Both, however, are rooted in the same fascination with people, their experiences, their emotions, and what makes them feel seen.
“Not Yet” is ultimately not a song about being fearless. It is a song about being afraid and moving forward anyway.
