California-born singer-songwriter Sunny Rae Keller explores motherhood, caregiving and the relationships connecting generations on new single ‘Carry You On’, the latest introduction to her forthcoming debut album Pocket.
Written during an artist residency at Château Orquevaux in France, where she was staying alongside her mother, the song emerged from conversations about their family history. In particular, the artist drew inspiration from her mother, her adoptive grandmother and the biological grandmother she never knew.
Built around fingerpicked acoustic guitar, restrained percussion and her warm vocals, ‘Carry You On’ considers caregiving as a reciprocal relationship. Her mother spent years caring for a parent with Alzheimer’s while also raising her, leading the songwriter to reflect on how parents shape their children while being changed by them in return.
Now living between Paris and Los Angeles, the Paris College of Art filmmaking graduate brings a distinctly visual sensibility to her folk songwriting. With Pocket approaching, ‘Carry You On’ offers a personal but accessible glimpse into a record shaped by memory, family and the experiences that quietly follow us through life.
