Melbourne-based songwriter Gary Hubber returns with A Dangling Thread, a reflective and emotionally resonant new album that explores uncertainty, identity, connection, and the unfinished nature of life itself. Led by the intimate and philosophical single “Hear It From You,” the ten-track record blends warm pop-rock textures with conversational lyricism and quietly powerful storytelling, cementing Hubber’s reputation as a songwriter who values emotional honesty over easy answers.
Built around themes of vulnerability, resilience, love, self-reflection and human complexity, A Dangling Thread is less concerned with resolution than with the courage required to keep moving through uncertainty. Across its ten songs, Hubber creates a world where meaning emerges gradually, through observation, memory, emotional tension, and the fragile connections that shape everyday life.
At the emotional centre of the album sits lead single “Hear It From You,” a reflective pop-rock track about emotional suspension and waiting for clarity that hasn’t yet arrived. Anchored by the lyric “my future’s uncertain, a dangling thread,” the song became both the philosophical heart and title inspiration for the record itself.
“There are moments in life where everything feels suspended,” Hubber explains. “You sense that something’s shifting, but until certain words are spoken, nothing fully lands. This song sits inside that waiting period.”
Rather than forcing resolution, “Hear It From You” allows uncertainty to breathe naturally, capturing the uneasy space between instinct and confirmation. Warm instrumentation and understated songwriting create an atmosphere of quiet intimacy, reflecting the album’s broader philosophy: life rarely ties itself up neatly, and sometimes the most honest thing we can do is live alongside the unanswered questions.
Known for writing songs “the long way round,” Hubber’s music combines familiar rock instincts with thoughtful modern reflection. His songs leave room for interpretation, inviting listeners to bring their own experiences into the emotional landscape of the record.
Throughout A Dangling Thread, each song contributes to a wider philosophical arc. Opening track “Running from the Light” embraces movement and curiosity in the face of mortality, while “People Are Strange” gently celebrates individuality and human difference. Elsewhere, “Rock of Gibraltar” reflects on the people who quietly hold others together, “Jump Into The Fire” encourages emotional risk-taking, and “Blues Avenue” pays tribute to music as a place of shared release and connection.
As the album unfolds, the emotional terrain becomes increasingly complex. “I’m Your Prisoner” explores emotional entrapment and contradiction, while “Who Rules Your World?” turns inward to question the voices shaping our perception of ourselves. Closing track “Crazing On You” intentionally leaves the thread untied, embracing ambiguity and unresolved identity rather than pretending certainty exists.
“It’s a record about living with uncertainty,” says Hubber. “Life is fragile, unfinished and unpredictable, but there’s still meaning in continuing forward anyway.”
Musically, A Dangling Thread blends melodic pop-rock songwriting with warm guitars, grounded rhythms and reflective lyricism that favour nuance over spectacle. Drawing on classic rock sensibilities while embracing emotional restraint and introspection, Hubber crafts songs that feel deeply personal yet universally relatable.
The release follows Hubber’s acclaimed 2025 album New Tricks, whose standout track “Rise, Shine, and Fly” was voted a Top Five Song of the Year by the Real Songwriters of Melbourne, further establishing him as a thoughtful and emotionally perceptive voice within Australia’s songwriting community.
With A Dangling Thread, Gary Hubber delivers a record that doesn’t attempt to simplify life’s complexities. Instead, it finds beauty in uncertainty itself, in the unresolved moments, the fragile connections, and the quiet decision to keep moving forward even when the answers remain just out of reach.
