Funk, soul and R&B trio Molly Gone Mad introduce their world with debut album Modern World, an ambitious 14-track record that looks directly at the anxieties of contemporary life before finding its antidote in love, friendship, movement and human connection.
Written against a backdrop of climate anxiety, technological upheaval, war, social fragmentation and the relentless pace of modern life, Modern World isn’t interested in dwelling on the darkness. Instead, Molly Gone Mad focus on intimacy, romance, friendship, touch, humour, escapism and the simple pleasure of having a good time.
“There is no point in hiding from our fears,” the band explain. “We can face them whilst still focusing on joy, human connection, love and honesty. Being a human being is beautiful.”
Rooted in funk, R&B and soul, the record moves freely through deep grooves, heavy guitars, hip-hop rhythms, jazz musicianship, psychedelic textures and dancefloor-ready moments. Raised on funk, soul, jazz and classical music, the trio operate by a simple creative philosophy: taste comes first, genre follows.
That sound has been years in the making. After effectively discarding three albums’ worth of material, the band began Modern World by establishing a shared “creative mission”, individually writing songs before bringing their demos into the rehearsal room and discovering which tracks best captured their live energy.
Recording began at Angel Studios, London, in November 2025, before the band headed to Abbey Road Studios in February 2026 to complete the album. Another six months were spent developing the songs with producer Rocco Spaziani Testa, adding instrumentation including saxophone and violin to create the expansive sound they had envisioned.
Modern World is also intended as the first chapter of something larger. Its artwork takes the form of a leather book, establishing a visual and conceptual world the band plan to expand across future albums. A 35-minute documentary capturing the recording and production process will accompany the release, alongside a full-length live version of the album for YouTube and a run of live performances.
Molly Gone Mad already have more than 200,000 streams and seven million combined social media views, multiple BBC Introducing features and a live BBC Introducing radio session. They have also supported K.O.G, High Fade, Bare Jams and The High Points, performed on Lakefest’s Main Stage and headlined AberJazz.
With Modern World, the trio turn those foundations into their first definitive statement. It’s a record interested in the world around them without forgetting the importance of actually living in it.
Part cultural mirror and part cultural balm, Modern World acknowledges the chaos waiting outside the room while celebrating the joy, love and connection that make being inside it worthwhile.
