Liverpool blues-rock powerhouse The Heavy North return with their latest single ‘Alive’, a passionate exploration of infatuation, uncertainty and the intoxicating feeling of finding someone capable of making everything else disappear.
Blending the band’s blues-rock foundations with their trademark soul and rock ‘n’ roll energy, ‘Alive’ captures the emotional limbo of falling deeply for someone without knowing whether those feelings are truly reciprocated. Rather than dwelling on that uncertainty, the track zeroes in on the exhilarating side of the connection, the moments when simply being close to somebody makes you feel more present than ever.
“‘Alive’ is essentially a love song about being infatuated with someone and not knowing if they feel the same love you feel for them,” the band explain. “A closeness and bond you share with someone almost makes you feel that nothing else in the world matters, and it can make you feel ‘alive’.”
‘Alive’ was recorded in spring 2025 at guitarist and producer Jose Ibanez’s 3rd Planet Recording Studio in Granada, Spain, during sessions for The Heavy North’s forthcoming third studio album. Additional recording took place back in Liverpool with drummer Mark Rice, before the track was mastered by Martin Kuchta at Roughgrain Mastering in 2026.
The accompanying music video brings the story back to the band’s hometown. Originally envisioned around two passionate dancers performing inside an empty venue, the concept evolved into something that played directly into The Heavy North’s identity as a live band. Filmed by Luca Crispin at The Kazimier Stockroom in Liverpool and edited by Dan Hewitson, the video creates the illusion of the band watching another version of themselves performing on stage.
Formed in Liverpool in 2018, The Heavy North have steadily grown from their early blues-rock beginnings into one of the city’s formidable independent live acts. Their breakthrough single ‘Lying To Yourself’ earned support from the late broadcaster Janice Long, who described the band as “absolutely brilliant”, before debut album Electric Soul Machine arrived in 2022.
Sophomore album Delta Shakedown followed in 2023 and delivered the band’s first Official UK Charts entries, reaching #19 on the Record Store Chart, #45 on the Independent Albums Chart and #10 on the Independent Album Breakers Chart. Their rise culminated in a 1,200-capacity headline show at Liverpool’s Camp and Furnace, later captured on the 21-track live album and concert film Fire In The Furnace.
The years since have brought further evolution. Following lineup changes, bassist George Favager of The Mysterines joined the band in 2025, while guitarist and producer Jose Ibanez’s relocation to Granada opened another chapter in their recording process. The resulting Spanish sessions now form the foundations of The Heavy North’s third studio album.
With ‘Alive’, The Heavy North turn their attention towards something universal: the vulnerability and exhilaration of wanting somebody, wondering if they want you just as much, and feeling momentarily unstoppable when you’re together.
As album three begins to take shape, ‘Alive’ captures The Heavy North doing exactly what its title suggests, sounding passionate, energised and ready for their next chapter.
