Ireland-based singer-songwriter Mick Rochford returns with “Sticks and Stones”, a heartfelt pop-rock ballad that confronts the lasting impact of bullying while carrying a message of resilience, empathy, and hope.
Blending pop rock, folk, and ballad-driven songwriting, the track sits in a reflective space emotionally, balancing vulnerability with quiet strength. Built around a direct lyrical approach and understated arrangement, “Sticks and Stones” focuses less on spectacle and more on the weight of lived experience and shared truth.
For Rochford, the song comes from a place of listening as much as writing.
“Sticks and Stones” was created for anyone who has experienced bullying at any stage of their life. The lyrics draw from personal experience, stories shared by people close to him, and wider conversations within the public, forming a composite reflection of how deeply words and behaviour can affect a person over time.
The intention behind the track was not only to reflect on harm, but to open up space for conversation around it.
Mick Rochford explains:
“I created this track for anyone that has suffered at the hands of a bully at any stage of their lives. Some words are personal experience, some are from people I know and love, and some are from the general public. It was very difficult to write and convey this important message that it’s not acceptable to be bullied by anyone for any reason and to start the conversation.”
That honesty sits at the centre of “Sticks and Stones”, which does not attempt to soften the reality of what is being described, but instead acknowledges it directly while pointing toward the possibility of healing and change.
Ireland-based and steadily building an international audience, Rochford first made his mark as a drummer performing with bands since the 1990s, including supporting iconic Irish group Aslan in major venues across the country. In recent years, he has transitioned into a solo career that has seen significant growth. Indeed, alongside his latest release, Rochford continues to see significant momentum across streaming platforms, social media, radio, and international independent charts:
- Viral single “Killing Me Today” – over 3.1 million TikTok views
- “War Child” – over 1.2 million TikTok views
- “I’ve Got Something to Say” – over 555,000 TikTok views
- Over 1 million Spotify listening minutes in 2025
- Nearly 5 million Spotify playlist impressions
- Airplay across 200+ radio stations worldwide
- Two interviews on FM104
- “Killing Me Today” reached #29 on the Euro Indie Music Chart
- Multiple tracks charting in the Euro Indie Top 100
These figures reflect the unexpected scale of Rochford’s recent rise. For an independent artist releasing original music later in his career, his growing audience spans streaming, radio, and short-form digital platforms, with multiple songs gaining traction simultaneously rather than through a single breakout moment.
His upcoming debut album, I’ve Got Something to Say, brings together this period of creative output into a full-length statement shaped by lived experience, emotional honesty, and a direct approach to songwriting that has connected strongly with listeners internationally.
Beyond music, Rochford’s career also spans leadership roles in community and charity work, including serving as CEO of Ireland’s national children’s cancer charity, alongside his work as CEO of Jax Bathroom Suppliers and as a kickboxing coach. These responsibilities sit alongside his music career and reflect a consistent focus on discipline, accountability, and service.
