Singer-songwriter Phoebe June announces her new EP, Kiss Me Over The Garden Gate, an intimate and collection of songs that traces the arc of a love story from the exhilaration of falling in love to the heartbreak of distance, uncertainty, and letting go.
Inspired by artists including Gracie Abrams, Taylor Swift, and Phoebe Bridgers, Phoebe June creates music rooted in emotional honesty, pairing melancholic ballads with subtle uptempo beats and diary-like lyricism. Her songs explore love, heartbreak, nostalgia, and the quiet complexities of everyday life, offering listeners a space to recognize their own experiences in hers.
At the heart of the EP is “Thursday”, a poignant song about a relationship separated by distance and the hope that love might survive the miles between two people. Written after Phoebe left a country that held deep personal meaning, and left someone she cared about behind, the song looks back on the relationship from its very beginning. Even the title carries a personal significance: the day Phoebe and this person first met was, as she later discovered, a Thursday.

Phoebe first began writing the song at 15, before she fully understood what love meant, returning to finish it after experiencing love herself.
“Dead Sea” continues with the feeling of a love that provides safety and stability through the darkest moments; a person who helps you stay afloat. Its darker sonic atmosphere creates an intentional contrast with lyrics about unwavering love.
With “Thursday”, the story begins to unravel as distance enters the relationship. “Getaway Car” moves into the aftermath: no contact, unanswered questions, lingering attachment, and the difficult realization that someone can have a profound impact on you while also being unhealthy for you. The song captures the tension between trying to let go and still caring deeply.
“One Day” returns to the possibility of a future reunion. It reflects on the relationship with the thought that perhaps, one day, things could work out but also recognizes that, if they never do, the love and memories will still remain. The final track, “Ophelia”, brings the story to its emotional breaking point. Inspired in part by the painting by Friedrich Heyser, the song explores the experience of feeling manipulated and used after giving everything to someone who never fully appreciated it. It confronts the carelessness of having someone’s heart in your hands while repeatedly insisting that the hurt was never intentional.
Together, the songs on Kiss Me Over The Garden Gate form a story that gradually shifts from light and hopeful to melancholy and heartbreaking. Phoebe June considered not only the lyrical narrative when sequencing the EP, but also its progression, allowing the brightness of “Everything You Are” to gradually fade into the sadness that closes the record.
