Surface Detail are moving into a more concept-focused phase with the release of new single “This Lantern” and plans for a new album this autumn.
Formed by Marceline Hamilton, Adam Anderson, Andrew Carus and Elaine Masson, the Scottish group have steadily expanded from their early background in a school jazz orchestra into progressive metal influenced by acts including Opeth, Dream Theater and Gojira.
Their latest track combines an irregular rhythmic foundation with forceful guitar passages, dissonant melodies and guest vocals from High Voltage’s Robbie Horn.
The upcoming album is expected to range beyond the sound of the single, with Masson’s keyboards and synthesizers bringing more electronic and cinematic elements into the band’s arrangements.
Surface Detail are also building a loose narrative around the record through short visual teasers. But rather than revealing a fixed storyline, the band are leaving its dystopian imagery and recurring symbols open to interpretation as further material is released.
