A new HAYBOY album campaign is underway following the release of “Smartness & Dollars,” the latest track from songwriter Daniel Brown.
Built around heavy guitar textures and a hypnotic, shifting feel, the song sits between alternative rock, psychedelic music and Americana. Its message is more reflective, with Brown examining the point at which chasing success can begin to obscure the value of close relationships.
The recording process paired spontaneity with patience. Brown, Dylan Hill and Steven Buehler tracked the song together in one session without rehearsal, while producer Lang Freeman later added lead guitar in a single take. Brown then spent much longer developing the final vocal.
The single also offers an early look at the wider artistic direction of HAYBOY’s upcoming record. Brown has created a parallel body of visual work inspired by mythology, with original drawings planned for inclusion in the first vinyl editions.
